Our master bedroom is a little on the traditional side and could stand to be a little more functional and stylish. I can’t say that it was ever decorated, more like we just filled it with furniture. Looking at the picture below, I’d also say it has a case of brown overload. I tried to lighten it up with the white and blue bedding but it’s still pretty dark. Back in my pre-K days (pre-kids), when I slept until 9 or 10 on a Saturday morning, a dark room was a must. Now that I get up at.the.break.of.dawn every morning, I could stand some brighter, cheerier morning light. And ladies, don’t be jealous, but those are autographed golf photos over the bed…romantic, I know.

Everything about this room yaaaawwwwnnns boring, instead of relaxing sanctuary. In my mind, I envision a light and airy, more contemporary, coastal vibe. Lighter walls, more texture, a shorter bed I don’t have to pole vault onto. I’d saved a few inspiration pictures but knew I found “the” room when I stumbled upon this image in Coastal Living.
Hubbie and I agree (yay!) and love the blue headboard which I think is totally DIY-able using this great video tutorial or this tutorial found at HGTV. Reading the materials list and watching the video, I would rate this an easy, one-day project. Hey, in the video she did it in 9 minutes!
Another thing I’d like to lighten up is that retro-in-a-bad-way ceiling fan.
In my dream world, I’d have a beautiful capiz light fixture like this…
or this…
Besides the fact that these are out of my price range, we both also like having a gentle breeze from an overhead fan at night. This would be a more practical choice for us:
So with that in mind, I whipped up a design board to help me figure out how to pull this look together.
My dilemma that I need your help with is that we bought these pottery barn nightstands on craigslist a year or so ago:
I like the nightstands, they’re nice and beefy, unlike the dinky little table that previously stood in as a nightstand. But again, there really brown and if you remember the inspiration photo, the tables are white and add an air of freshness and light to the room.
Another problem is that we could use more clothes storage. Our current pottery barn nightstands only have one, shallow drawer and some open shelving. I thought these Ikea Malm dressers might make great nightstands and add a good amount of storage.
These are also easy to find on craigslist so I could save money and the trouble of putting them together. The image below is what made me consider them as nightstands.
Or should I not worry about the storage, use what we have, and paint our existing nightstands a creamy white?
Below is a poll for you to help me decide. So go ahead, tell us what you think we should do.

I’m all over the existing painted white. They’re really cute. Plus, you could put baskets on both of the shelves to stash small stuff in. Undies, socks, bras, or tanks, etc. Is there anywhere else in the room the other kind would work?
Love all your inspiration photos, our bedroom is lacking in the style department as well. I think the tables you have would look great painted! You could use the money you save on a new fan.
Love the inspirations you have found. Ever think about painting out the fan fixture, silver paint on the metal and maybe do a crackled, creamy finish on the blades. You might even be able to find a different glass for the center, maybe something with a more sea glass feel to it. Loved the idea of painting the existing stands cream, may even leaving the tops the brown wood tone. Then you could use more natural baskets to tie all together. Or sand the finish off the tops and oil, then paint the bases. You have a fun project ahead and so much you can do. Good luck!!
Nice inspiration board! I am currently sweating over how to pull our master bedroom together as well…stressful! Your nightstands are really nice…I would totally paint them and add some baskets underneath, especially if you’re wanting a coastal vibe!
I LOVE that headboard!!! what a beautiful room! Its going to be just lovely when you are done. And I am with the “paint the existing tables white” group. They have great lines and you can always add a cute basket beneath for a little storage.
Your existing nightstands have similar turned details that are the same as your inspiration picture.
I think that is why the vote is going toward painting!
Have a great day
