DIY Plastic Animal Bookends

pinterest_bookend4

This is a super easy project that costs very little and doesn’t take much time. In fact, the most time consuming part is waiting for the paint to dry.

beginning

I started with an old bookend that had been dropped and broken. If you don’t have an old bookend, you can easily make this with two pieces of wood wood glued or nailed together at a right angle. I purchased two plastic dinosaurs from Michael’s for about 99 cents each. I’ve also seen them at Target and other stores.

prime

First, I lightly sanded the bookend and sprayed all the pieces with primer.

paint

I gave the primer a day to dry, then sprayed them with a Rustoleum spray paint in High Gloss Fern. Give them a day or two to cure as the high gloss paint is pretty sticky.

Next, I hot glued the feet and the tail of the dinosaur, that touch the bookends, to the wood base.

And Voila, two new bookends that cost me $6 for the paint and plastic dinosaurs.

That’s considerably cheaper than this Pottery Barn Teen version (no longer available) which sold for $49.
