Before I get started on Chase’s room, I thought I‘d try out one more little project in Anna’s room.
I’ve been wanting to add a ceiling medallion to Anna’s chandelier but couldn’t find one I truly liked. Here is what her light fixture looked like before.
When Cutting Edge Stencil asked if I wanted to try out one of their awesome stencils, I knew immediately which one I wanted to try, their butterfly ceiling medallion.
The stencil was a lot bigger than I expected, which I was happy about. You can see it above, still in the wrap. It is as wide as Anna’s full size bed.
As for supplies, I used a foam roller, a stencil brush, painters tape, a small paint pan, and Martha Stewart acrylic craft paint in a pearl finish.
I added the craft paint to my pan and rolled the foam brush for a nice even coat.
Using the painters tape, I taped the stencil around the chandelier base. This step requires 2 people as this is a large stencil and really hard to center and tape by yourself. Once I had the stencil secured with tape, I used the foam roller to roll over the cut outs, using my other hand to press the stencil firmly to the ceiling.
The stencil creates one half of the medallion. Once you are finished with one side, remove the stencil and allow the completed half to dry. I washed my stencil at this point to make sure I didn’t accidently transfer paint to the other side when I re-taped.
Once the first side was dry, I centered the stencil, taped and began painting the other side.
I love how the pearl paint has a nice shimmer from a distance.
Up close the color is a bit deeper. My next step is to use the stencil brush to dab the lighter pearl paint for a layered, shimmery effect and to even out any uneven spots. I’ll show that step in another post. I was so excited with how it looks so far, I wanted to share.
